The loco on pick-up goods duty was produced within two weeks from a Dave Alexander LNER Q6 kit with one of the first Peter Stanger chassis kits, after I decided a typical North Eastern coal train was needed for Hedleyhope at Scalefour North this year. It will be noticed the headlamp code is wrong for a pick-up goods, the loco having been plucked from its usual through-coal-train duty on the layout at the end of the Exhibition and stuck onto a few wagons for photographing. The loco combines a Dave Alexander white metal kit and a newly marketed Peter Stanger "compensated" chassis kit that was reviewed in MRJ No 181. I have added a profiled extension to the front of the frames and provided new guard-irons and front and rear sander pipes. I also fitted a piece of scrap etch to the centre of the fourth axle and vertically elongated the bearing holes of the rear suspension 'bogie' to make the chassis fully compensated. The inclusion of a grub-screwed boss removed from a Romford worm gear soldered to the kit worm wheel on the driven axle enabled the motor drive to be disconnected when setting up and quartering the chassis. Now runs superbly and silently after running-in tweaks.

	The non-railway buildings are all modelled on prototypes around the village although some had to be moved to fit the layout. The cottages have clay-scribed walls and plumbers hemp for thatch; they were awarded the MRJ Chalice at Scaleforum in 1998.

	BR/EE class 13 0-6-0 DE shunter No. 13003 One of three pairs of Class 08s converted into ' master' and ' slave' shunters in the mid-1960s for the arduous task of shunting the hump at Tinsley marshalling yard. South Yorkshire. The locos were withdrawn from service with the closure of the hump in January 1985. The model featured in the February 2004 issue of RAIL EXPRESS magazine, was converted from two Bachmann Class 08s and uses Ultrascale P4 wheels and Brassmasters couplings rods. The 'slave' is unpowered ( for the moment) while the ' master' is fitted with a Lenz LE1025 decoder. The model, along with the other two locomotives in the class, is intended to shunt the builders layout, 'The Hump', currently under-construction as part of the Scalefour Society 18.83 challenge.
	These pictures show Armley Wagon Works when I first got hold of it and had done little to it. I couldn't resist taking a few pictures while the weather was nice though. For more details see the larger pictures.

	Another P4 Steamline Sheffield production just about finished. Finney kit, very large Mashima in the tender with UJ drive shaft to High Level gearbox, Lenz Gold and UPS fitted, lifts 16 bogies, Gibson Wheels. Valve Gear fully adjustable with working conjugated valve gear. Will do a couple more when fitted with crew and cab doors.

		Comet Kit, Maygib Wheels, P4 with some etched parts from Bill Bedford, fully sprung using Brassmasters hornblocks and springs. Shed Plate to be fixed and it is stood on EM track at Millhouses Shed (hence the back wheels riding on the rims - I will relay that piece of track sometime!).
A London Road Models kit of the NE Class O/G5. Built by the Steamline Sheffield team and painted and lined by Ian Rathbone. The wheels were not lined as it is to be weathered slightly and there was no evidence of them being there in our photos of this engine. Mashima 1626 Round Can coupled to a High Level Gear Box. 9F with Percy chassis: Well here it is in P4 and with tender motor driving through into the loco, I do have to admit that you are left to your own imagination with a lot of the construction and parts!!
Photo of the month, September 2006		Built by the Steamline Sheffield team from a Martin Finney kit, powered by a Mashima 14/16x20 Flat Can set on a High Level Gearbox with Ultrascale Wheels, Hornby Scale Couplings, painted by Ian Rathbone and finished touches and final running by me. Photo of the month, August 2003	Built, painted, lined and weathered by the Steamline team, three of us at the moment from a Finney kit to P4 with all the Auto working stuff scratch built.
45440 is a Brassmasters Black 5 built to S4 gauge with sliding windows, tip up seats and working reversing gear. It spent a few hours at ExpoEM running round the test track at full speed with 9 old heavy kitmaster coaches hung on behind it. Ultrascale wheels and a portescap motor
	78030 is again in S4 and is a much modified DJH kit. Compensation using the original frames with sliding hornblocks directly into the frames. My own set of Standard castings plus loads of added detail. It is the Crew Pet of the 60's and therefore nice and clean. Mashima 1024 with a Branchlines 50:1 gearbox using Ultrascale gears. Again this loco ran at ExpoEM for 3 hours without derailments or mishaps.
These three show what can be done with an rtr body and a bit of care...... they are all taken by Len Weal (RM) at the NEC Exhibition and feature plastic bodies, Comet chassis, Ultrascale Wheels (S4) and Smiths couplings, plus a little bit of tinkering here and there. The weathering is applied with an airbrush plus detail using thinners and powders. (5764 photo of the month March 2003).

	Ex LNWR G2A Left. Highland Rly 0-4-4T No.25 Right
	Here is a Stanier 2-6-4T built from the Gibson range. The loco is built to P4 gauge using the parts supplied in the kit for a P4 chassis. This loco will run very well round a test track of two 3' 6" reverse curves. It is also the 2-6-4T that is listed in the S4 news with the results of the Chairmans cup. Apart from not staying on the test track the other results were quite satisfactory. Next time I will build em to climb a scale 9" step on the curve !!!!!

	Ubiquitous 1/108 from Airfix kit with Exactoscale FASS suspension and Masokits brake parts. Midland pattern bufferstops from NS rail offcuts and plasticard oddments. (Photo of the Month, January 2002)
	OBA from the Cambrian kit. Only mods are fitting of suspension from Exactoscale FASS system and the odd improvement to the underframe gubbins. Yes, the prototype was painted just like this with Railfreight red faded to a sicky pink and a half-baked attempt to repaint the top planks. (Photo of the Month, July 2002)
	24 1/2 ton mineral wagon to diagram 1/115 rusts gently in the sun. The NCB shunter had trouble with the brakegear and had it banged up against the stopblock out of the way until it could be dealt with. Built from the Parkside kit, with Masokits brake gear and compensation.
	Straightforward Lowfit built from the Red Panda kit with compensated W-irons. Some extra bits of decorative brake gear have been added, pull rods and safety loops for example. Vehicle has replacement Oleo buffers, still painted in grey primer. Ideally the buffer shanks should be polished steel but I'm too lazy to tackle that. Oh yes, and this cruel close-up shows how much trouble I had getting the number decals neatly lined up. This was before Modelmaster decals, when you spent hours marshalling tiny Woodhead numerals into line with the end of a scalpel to get the right number.
	A view towards the stopblocks on a short section of siding I built last year. The stopblocks are made from scribed styrene and BH rail ends to a Midland Railway drawing reproduced in Midland Record. Track is C&L . The brick wall is Wills with coping bricks from plasticard. Foreground foliage is in the style of Norman and Welch, the bushes and trees in the background are 300mm/ft scale.
	Standard BR brakevan built from the etched brass Pocket Money Kit. Built pretty much as suggested by the instructions. Runs on MJT compensated W-irons which fit neatly underneath without having to adjust the ride height (cunning design or pure luck, not sure which). Verandah corner posts are angle section rather than solid section due to the fold-up nature of the kit, but it is not obvious. Something which shows up horribly in the photo are the rather featureless axlebox castings supplied with the kit, which would be easy to improve upon with a few lumps of styrene. Good and cheap introduction to etched brass kits for somebody wishing to dip the proverbial toe in the flux. (Photo of the Month, January 2006)
1.		1. Some progress on a Bradwell WD. The tender is fully sprung in the Bradwell fashion. I was sceptical about the merits of 'real' suspension but watching this tender glide along the track has made a convert of me. Electrical pick up is from tender one side and loco on the other. Wheels were shorted by wires on the back of loco drivers and by silver conductive paint on tender wheels. Works fine. Hooray, no ******g wipers! Gearbox on back axle of loco is Exactoscale WGD 36:1. Drive shaft is Ultrascale, but with joints reduced in diameter to fit in eyewateringly tight space beneath cab floor and above dragbox. Motor sits on a silicone rubber isolation mount and structure borne noise from the tender is minimal.

2. A closer look at the driveline in a Bradwell WD. My first attempt at a motor in tender configuration. As shown it worked reasonably well except at very slow speed. Tender chassis was revised to fit a larger Mashima 1828(?) with the biggest flywheel I can get on the back. The joint angle on the gearbox input was reduced from the modest angle you see in the photo to damn near straight by lengthening the gearbox reaction arm and taking a chunk out of the top of the dragbox. Works very well indeed now at all speeds, smooth and silent ( and therefore unprototypical !). So far the parts have gone together with uncanny accuracy, however Mr Bradwell doesn't get too specific about drive components so that's where the hard work is.

This picture was taken at Scaleforum 2003 of the Southern Railway B1 Class 4-4-0 hauling the articulated Coach Set 514 at Leysdown.

The locomotive won a highly commended for Jeff Day in the Chairman's Cup on the Saturday and has it's origins in a Falcon Brass kit, although heavily modified with the tender being virtually scratch-built. The articulated set was scratch-built by myself. The two together form a prototypical train for the Sheppey Light Railway having been photographed at Leysdown in 1936.
